Aerial Performance Attire

5/1/2014

Comments

A few of my students are performing in our upcoming student showcase (TGR Fitness presents Elements) and some are competing in the AAFA Amateur Aerial Competition this summer and I have been getting a lot of questions about apparel/costuming from those performing aerial, so I thought I would share my tips with the them here.

1. COVERAGE!

Make sure you have adequate coverage based on your performance. Don’t have a bare midriff if you are doing a straddle back. It will not only be pretty unflattering in pictures, but it will also be pretty uncomfortable.

Don’t have bare armpits if you will be sliding upside down on the fabric using the friction from said armpits.

Ask me how I know this...

2. COVERAGE! (for another reason)

Be aware of chest coverage especially when doing a hammock routine. The hammock tends to wrap and bind at your waist, so if you have a beautiful backless unitard and are in a D-wrap back breaker, you may end up with WAY more side boob (and possibly more) that you anticipated.

Ask me how I know this...

3. You are not limited to leggings!

Unitards and leotards with nude footless tights are always a good option. Or even shorts with nude tights under.

The top picture is a unitard with a sheer top
(these tops are sold at TGR for cheap)

The bottom are simply shorts with tights

The right one is the same unitard with a vest

4. Black is okay.

You will be on white fabrics and even thou the theater is dark, there is spot and colored lighting. But I would advise against going all black, just because its easy.

This is a good change to switch it up and wear something crazy!

5. TIGHT clothes!

Make sure whatever you are wearing is fitted or the fabric will eat it! You don’t want to get your hands tangled up in loose clothes or worst, have them get caught in a fold in the fabric. So stretchy and tight is the way to go. Spandex! :)

Also Stretchy and Tight jeans (jeggings) work great and are edgy!

6. Material.

Be careful with sequins, which can get caught on the fabric and shiny slippery material, which can be a real issue when gripping. It’s all do-able, just make sure you practice with it.

These leggins are super cute, but they are very slippery! They worked fine for a hammock performance, but I would wear anything like that for a full silk routine.

7. Be creative!

Nude leotard
Nude Tights
Body paint!

Boom!

I hope this helps and that we can all laugh at my past mishaps and learn from them! :)

Have fun with it and go wild!
